Drag files and folders in the folder tree

  • Rows in the folder tree can now be dragged. Dropping onto a folder moves the item into it, and open tabs follow the file to its new location. Dropping onto a file puts the item in the folder that file sits in; a folder you drop onto opens to show it.
  • Something dragged in from outside the project, such as from the Finder, is copied rather than moved; a name already taken gets a “copy” suffix. A folder cannot be dropped into itself, a workspace root is never moved, and moving onto an existing name reports the clash instead of overwriting.

Open Recent File and Open Recent Project

  • File ▸ Open Recent is now two menus. Open Recent File is the list it always was. Open Recent Project lists the folders and .code-workspace files you have opened, with the full path in its tooltip, and each menu has its own Clear Menu.

Find in Files shows its progress and can be stopped

  • Results now appear as the search runs, with a running count of files searched, instead of arriving all at once at the end. A Stop button ends a long search and keeps what it has found.

Fixes

  • Choosing a File-menu command after opening a New Window could act on the window you had just come from, so a project opened from the new window appeared in the old one. Menu commands now follow the window you are actually working in.
  • Splitting a terminal could occasionally leave the shell that stayed in place showing a blank pane. The terminal view now stays with the pane that is on screen.

Known limits in 1.19.0

  • Moving a file in the folder tree by dragging is not undoable; use the Trash and the Finder for that. An item dragged into a different window is copied, since that window’s folders are not this one’s.
  • The terminal panel shows up to three shells in two columns. Terminal sessions are not restored after quitting the app.
  • The universal Studio download requires macOS 14 or later. Touch ID and Mac-password vault unlocking use the provisioning profile included in the signed build; password and recovery-key access remain available without it.
