Linelark Finder++
What shipped in 0.7.0.
Creating things
- New File in the File menu and in the menu on empty space: a text file, a Markdown document, JSON, an HTML page, a shell script or an empty file. JSON, HTML and the script start with a minimal skeleton; the rest are empty. A name already taken becomes
untitled 2.txtrather than overwriting anything. - New ▸ Folder with Selection and New ▸ Empty Folder in the menu on one or more items. The first makes a folder and moves the selection into it, the way Finder’s own command does.
- What you just made is selected and scrolled into view, new folders included — before, a new folder only appeared in the list.
- Undo covers New File the way it covers New Folder: it goes to the Trash rather than away, and redo writes the template again instead of digging it out of the Trash.
Rename with a click
- Click the name of an item that is already the only one selected and, after the double-click interval, the name becomes editable in place. A double-click still opens the item, and a drag, a modifier key or a click outside the Name column does nothing of the kind.
Known limits in 0.7.0
- Click-to-rename works in the list view only. That is the one view with in-place editing; the others rename through a dialog, which would be intrusive to open from a plain click.
- Undo covers move, rename, New Folder, New File and Move to Trash — not copy, duplicate, compress, Make Alias or New Folder with Selection.
- A new file or folder is selected but not yet in rename mode: press Return to name it.
- Nothing can be created in Recents, a saved search or search results — those are queries, not folders — and “New Folder with Selection” is not offered there.
- The toolbar field filters the current folder by name; going deeper or looking inside files means picking one of the offered searches, which are a query rather than a folder, capped at 1000 files and only as good as the Spotlight index behind them.
- The Trash usually opens in Finder, because
~/.Trashis behind Full Disk Access, which no app can ask for. - Cross-volume moves use Foundation’s move operation. This is not a resumable transfer engine.
- “Open in New Finder++” launches a second copy of the app rather than a second window, and the two share Favorites, so whichever changes them last wins.
- It does not replace Finder and does not integrate with the system as a Finder substitute.
